چکیده

Speech-based command interfaces are becoming more and more common in cars. Applications include automatic dialog systems for hands-free phone calls as well as more advanced features such as navigation systems. However, interferences, such as speech from the codriver, can significantly hamper the performance of the speech recognition component, which is crucial for those applications. This issue can be addressed with adaptive interference cancellation techniques such as the Generalized Sidelobe Canceller (GSC). In order to cancel the interference (codriver) while not cancelling the target (driver), adaptation must happen only when the interference is active and dominant. This paper proposes a novel approach for pre-estimation of target and interference energies, along with its application to “explicit” adaptation control: a hard decision whether the filter(s) should be updated or not. It is compared with an “implicit” adaptation control method that does not require such pre-estimation. Two physical setups S1 and S2 are considered, with respectively 2 directional microphones, or 4 directional microphones in the rear-view mirror, as shown in Fig. 1. The spacing between microphones is 17 cm in S1, and 5 cm in S2. Section 1 presents an adaptation algorithm for each setup. Section 2 describes the two adaptation control methods. Experiments on real in-car recordings are presented in Section 3. Section 4 concludes. A detailed version of this paper can be found in [6], and will include additional experimental results in the future.

Sector-Based Detection for Hands-Free Speech Enhancement in Cars

Adaptation control of beamforming interference cancellation techniques is investigated for in-car speech acquisition. Two efficient adaptation control methods are proposed that avoid target cancellation. The “implicit” method varies the step-size continuously, based on the filtered output signal. The “explicit” method decides in a binary manner whether to adapt or not, based on a novel estimate...

Instructed Second Language English Pragmatics in the Iranian Context

The present study aimed to review the instruction of the L2 speech acts in English pragmatics in the Iranian context during the last two decades from 2000 to 2020. To this end, upon the completion of the study search, the retrieved articles were selected and analyzed based on the research domain.  The results of our synthesis from 54 studies carried out on the instruction of the speech act not ...

The Impact of Explicit and Implicit Recasts on the Grammatical Accuracy of Iranian EFL Learners’ Writing Performance

The present study aimed at investigating the effects of explicit and implicit recasts on Iranian EFL learners' acquisition of English relative clauses. For this purpose, 64 participants were selected out of 94 intermediate level EFL learners at Falagh language Institute, Rasht, Iran. To have homogenized groups, the researcher administered a language proficiency test (TOEFL). Then, the researche...

The Effect of Explicit and Implicit Instruction through Plays on EFL Learners’ Speech Act Production

Despite the general findings that address the positive contribution of teaching pragmatic features to interlanguage pragmatic development, the question as to the most effective method is far from being resolved. Moreover, the potential of literature as a means of introducing learners into the social practices and norms of the target culture, which underlie the pragmatic competence, has not been...

Mixed Effects of Input Enhancement, Explicit Instruction, Corrective Feedback, and Pushed Output in an Input-Output Mapping Practice

This investigation examined the mixed effects of visual input enhancement, explicit instruction, pushed output, and corrective feedback on noticing and intake of English conjunctive adverbs. Participants included 83 intermediate EFL students enrolled in a grammar and writing course. They were assigned to a control group (n = 22), explicit instruction + pushed output + explicit corrective feedba...
